Buying guide

Compare phones with a plan

A phone with a plan combines a new device with a calling and data plan in one monthly amount. You pay off the device in instalments, often with a down payment. Below you compare daily-updated deals for popular devices such as the latest iPhone, Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel, with the monthly costs, device price and any down payment laid out clearly side by side.

How is the monthly price built up?

The monthly amount on a device plan has two parts: the cost of your plan (calls, texts and data) and the monthly device payment. Some providers also ask for a one-off down payment to lower the monthly amount. In our overview you see the total monthly amount per deal, plus the device price and down payment separately, so you can compare the real cost over the full term.

Which device suits you?

If you want a new flagship every two to three years, you usually pick the latest iPhone Pro or Samsung Galaxy S Ultra. If you want strong performance at a lower price, models a generation older or brands such as Google Pixel and OnePlus offer excellent value. Watch the storage: 128 GB is enough for most users, but if you take a lot of photos and video, 256 GB or more is roomier.

Watch the total cost, not just the monthly amount

A low monthly amount can be misleading if there is a high down payment, or if the term is long. Always work out the total cost: monthly amount times the term, plus the down payment. Compare that with buying the device outright plus a SIM only plan. Sometimes buying separately and taking SIM only is cheaper.

Device insurance and warranty

A new device comes with a standard two-year legal warranty within the EU. Additional device insurance against damage or theft is optional and costs a few euros per month. Consider whether the premium is worth it against the excess and the value of the device.

Frequently asked questions

What does a phone with a plan cost per month?
That depends on the device, the data bundle and the term. The monthly amount consists of the plan cost plus the monthly device payment. In our overview you see the total monthly amount per deal.
Is a down payment required?
Not always. Some deals have no down payment, others ask for a one-off amount to lower the monthly cost. Any down payment is listed separately per deal.
Is buying a device outright cheaper?
Sometimes. For an expensive device and a long term, buying outright plus a SIM only plan can work out cheaper. Work out the total cost over the full term to compare this.
How much storage do I need?
For most users 128 GB is enough. If you take a lot of photos and videos or keep many apps and games offline, 256 GB or more is more comfortable.
How much warranty do I get on the device?
Within the EU there is at least a two-year legal warranty on a new device. Additional damage or theft insurance is optional.
