Compare SIM only
A SIM only plan is almost always cheaper than a plan with a device, because you only pay for calls, texts and data. If you already have a working phone, SIM only lets you choose how much data you need and how long you commit. Below you compare daily-updated SIM only plans from providers including Simyo, Ben, Odido, Vodafone and KPN, sorted by price and data bundle.
How much data do you need?
If you mostly call and rarely stream, 1 to 5 GB is plenty. If you use your phone daily for social media, navigation and music, 10 to 25 GB usually fits well. If you stream a lot of video on the go or share your connection with other devices, choose an unlimited SIM only plan. Note that unlimited bundles often apply a fair-use speed after a certain amount of usage.
Which network should you choose?
The Netherlands has three physical networks: KPN, Odido and Vodafone. KPN is known for the broadest nationwide coverage, including rural areas. Odido scores strongly on speed in urban areas. Vodafone sits between them on coverage and speed. Providers such as Simyo, Ben and Lebara use one of these networks, so you often get the same coverage at a lower price.
Monthly cancellable or fixed contract?
A monthly cancellable SIM only plan gives maximum flexibility: you can switch or stop every month. A 12 or 24 month contract is usually a few euros per month cheaper, but you are tied in longer. If you expect to take a new device with a plan soon, monthly cancellable is the better choice.
How do you switch and keep your number?
Keeping your current mobile number is free via a number-porting request. You first take out your new SIM only plan and indicate that you want to keep your number. The new provider arranges the switch and cancels your old plan, usually within one working day. Wait to cancel your old plan until the switch is complete, so you are never without service.
